Save your knees and run along the Jackie O' reservoir!
It's true. If you run on asphalt all the time, you will be an ass and you will eventually falter. Okay, I take it back. I just wanted to say something snappy. However, every so often, it's not a bad idea to run on softer surfaces. I wouldn't recommend running on grass necessarily, simply because you might not be seeing what you are stepping on. It could be an acorn, or a branch or....that's disgusting! You thought I meant that? No. I think one could see dog poop. At least I hope.
I ran around the Jackie Onassis Central Park Reservoir Loop tonight. I've done it in the past, but never in a training mode like tonight. Each loop is approximately 1.55 miles in distance. I did a little over three loops notching up almost 5 miles. The nice thing about this, is that you are always running with many other people. That's what makes running fun in New York City. That's what brings me back every day to run in the Big Apple. Not to take anything away from Long Island, but I cannot understand why it is the way my friend says it is which is that people in Long Island have all these beautiful areas to run around, and no one runs at all. They just fix their houses, talk about fixing their houses, or go to Home Depot to listen to how other people are talking about fixing their houses, so that they can finally go and...
Meantime, in Manhattan, there is nowhere to run except for a few parks. But these parks are jammed with interested parties who wish to exercise and look the best they possible can. It's no wonder why a recent report published in the local newspapers stated that Manhattanites had the fewest obese people by percentage. Da Bronx was in dead last.
The last time I ran this course was back on May 10 of last year (see blog here -> http://roadtonewyork.blogspot.com/2008/05/inaugural-run-central-park-reservoir.html )
One of these days I'm going to want to try the trail that's between the main course & the oval. The ground is even softer there, though it's no less popular than any of the other two areas to run in the capital of running, Central Park.

"the great dog's poop stinky race". Great title for a new movie where NY is the main location. It suits Queens perfectly. The top 10%get their running shoes cleaned by the other 90%. What a "Fellini" scene!
